The Giving Trees were a huge success! We got over 1300 donations for the Hope House! We picked up the trees and donations from Tia's, Cakehole, and the schools on Tuesday. With the help of a few of our service learning classmates we loaded up the donations and took them to the Hope House. It was really great to see all of our hard work pay off and help so many people especially over the holidays. It was so great to see the entire community come together to help so many people during the holidays. We doubled the amount of donations from last year for the Hope House. I am so happy with how many donations we received and how much they will be appreciated by people who need it!

Over the past couple of weeks, we have made a lot of progress. As we got closer to the starting date of the donations, we began to get really busy. We finalized the flyer that will be hung up at the schools and businesses. We made the QR code for the Amazon Wishlist and the supplies list. After we had the QR code finalized we made the labels to go on the tags. Different from last year, we made two QR codes and had labels on the front and back of the tag. With the help of Student Council all of the tags were cut out into fun Christmas shapes like ornaments, reindeer, and Christmas trees. Audra and I spent multiple class period putting the labels on the tags and then putting the strings through the tags so they could hang on the trees. We had hundreds of tags that needed to be made and we thankfully had the help of our classmates, Student Council, and some of the office staff. With all the people we had helping us we got the tag done way faster than we expected. About a week after the completion of the tags, we went to set up the trees. Our whole service learning class helped us get this done in one class period. Audra and I went to Tia's, Cakehole, Subway, and the Library to set up flyers and trees. We had mini trees and a flyer for both Cakehole and Tia's, and just flyers for Subway and the Library. The rest of our class went to Brandywine, NPI, NPJH, and sugar creek to drop off trees and flyers. Student Council set up the High School trees right before Thanksgiving break with all the tags on them. We are really excited to see how many donations we are able to get for the Hope House!
Last Wednesday Audra and I visited local businesses to see if they would allow us to put one of our Giving Trees in their business. We went to seven different local places. We got the okay to put trees into two of the places, and in another two we got permission to hang up a flyer, but no tree. At the other places, we still need to reach out to the managers by email. We also planned on getting trees into other new pal schools. Mr. Burk helped us with reaching out to those schools, and four of the five other schools so far are wanting trees. The Hope House sent us their wishlist, so we have been working on getting the points system for class cup, and making a new Amazon Wishlist with those items. We have also been making flyers to put up around NPHS, take to the other schools for the students to get, and hang up in business so people have more information on what the trees are about. Since the Giving Trees project does not officially start for another month, Audra and I have been spending most of our time on our Haunted Halls project, but we have talked with Mr. Burk and made plans for when the Giving Trees do start. We have a timeline laid out for each step of the process that begins in November. After fall break next week Audra and I are going to go to local business on the long day to ask if we could set up a tree in their business, and also reach out to the community schools that we are planning to put a tree. After we know how many trees we need and where the trees are going we can really start to get into our Giving Trees project.
After brainstorming ideas with my partner Audra, we came up with idea idea to take on the Giving Trees project that was started last year. Mr. Burk enlisted the help of the service learning class last year to help run the project with in the high school. This year Audra and I had the idea to expand the Giving Trees to other New Pal schools. By expanding this project we hope to get more donations for the Hope House. We also are continuing the class cup tradition with the Giving Trees, and since we are expanding the idea into other school like the Junior High, we are going to make a similar competition to incentivize students to donate. After talking with Mr. Burk we decided to reach out to local businesses to see if they would be willing to let us put a Giving Tree in their businesses. We added Mr. Burk's ideas into our presentation so it was ready for Pitch Day. After we presented our pitch in front of your class and school administrators, we got some great feedback on how to make our ideas come to life. Since the Giving Trees are going to begin in early November, we are taking on another project in the time before called Haunted Halls at NPJH to raise money for Riley. |
